Sudan: AUC chair Youssouf calls for cessation of hostilities

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf has called for an immediate end to hostilities in Sudan.

In a statement, Youssouf condemned ongoing attacks around El Fasher in North Darfur, as well as in the Zanuam and Abu Shouk camps. 

He called for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, urging those besieging El Fasher to lift the blockade and allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expresses deep concern over escalating violence in Sudan, particularly around El Fasher, North Darfur, including credible reports of intensified attacks in Zanuam and Abu Shouk camps.”  

“These assaults have resulted in the deaths of civilians, including children and humanitarian workers, an unacceptable and grave violation of international humanitarian and human rights law. The Chairperson conveys his condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Sudan,” read the statement.

The AUC chair noted that the well-being of the Sudanese people must be the top priority, urging all parties to create conditions for peace and development.

He also called on Sudanese leaders to show political will by committing to a durable ceasefire and engaging in a comprehensive, inclusive, and Sudanese-led political process.

The chair further affirmed the AU’s commitment to working with Sudanese stakeholders to protect civilians and restore peace, stability, and democratic governance.

The statement comes as diplomats and aid officials gather in London for a one-day conference hosted by Britain, France, Germany, the EU, and the AU. 

The meeting aims to address the two-year war in Sudan, which has killed tens of thousands, displaced over 14 million people and pushed much of the country toward famine.

The conflict erupted after tensions between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) escalated.
